Children & Youth

All programs for children and youth are currently under revision and updating.  EMUC offers age-appropriate faith-based programs that equip children and youth to learn about and experience the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ.  The following are activities typical of EMUC’s ministries with young people and they are updated to meet ongoing needs.

Baby Care:

A diaper changing table is available in the wheelchair-accessible washroom on the main floor just through the doors near the coffee area.

Quiet Room:

A room adjoining the worship space is provided for parents with restless infants and children.  A offers view of the sanctuary and audio is provided from the service.  Although not sound-proof, the room limits noise and provide a place for children to participate in quiet activities.

EMU Club:

EMU Club offers Christian education for children ages 3 to 8 years.  Our story-based curriculum “One Room Sunday School” explores the major stories of the Bible.  Children engage the stories in age-appropriate ways: through arts and crafts, music, story-telling and games.  The program provides a take-home activity so that learning continues at home.  Our goal is to help children experience God in the Bible story, explore God’s presence in their own lives and in the world.

Before going to EMU Club during the service, children participate by offering to carry the Bible to the pulpit which is referred to as ‘the little entrance’ in the service.

Junior Youth:

Junior Youth programs welcome pre-teens and early teens (ages 9 – 13 years).  They encourage youth to explore their faith and their Christian identity through the stories of the Bible.  Current social concerns and global issues are discussed from a faith perspective.  Past activities have included dramas in worship, music, sleepovers, bowling parties and other fun activities.

Teen Talk/Senior Youth:

This program strives to address the particular interests and faith questions of youth ages 14-19 years.  It is a Bible based program that addresses topics such as community building, group dynamics, the value of gratitude, community service, power and privilege and the history of Christianity.  Youth participate in debates and discussions.  Youth are occasionally involved in worship leadership, drama and music.

Special Youth programs such as the Go Project to Nova Scotia and mission trips offer youth opportunities to explore their faith while helping others.

Seasonal events for children and youth such as the Hanging of the Greens, where families help decorate the church for Christmas, the Christmas pageant, the Candlelight service, Good Friday service, are held throughout the Christian calendar year.

Ian MacRae Bursary:

A bursary in memory of Ian MacRae is awarded annually to a student preparing to attend a college or university in the fall.  This bursary is offered to all students and is not restricted to members of the congregation.  Application forms and a brochure with the bursary details are available in the church office.  Submissions are due by the end of May each year.

Connecting with Young Adults:

EMUC plans various events to gather young adults living in the area, attending post secondary institutions and the newly employed.  Please contact the office with phone numbers and/or emails of any interested adults so that event notices may be sent to them.
