The Christian Year
This is an overview of some of the key celebrations during the year at Erin Mills United Church.

The Hanging of the Greens
This event signals the start of the advent season. Lights are hung on the trees surrounding the church and Christmas decorations are hung inside the building. A potluck meal usually begins or completes the event.

Advent
For four Sundays prior to Christmas day, special services and gatherings include advent wreath lightings, joyous music, carol singing, candlelight services, a performance by the Toronto Mendelssohn choir, and opportunities to share with the community through donations, visits and special projects.

Christmas Eve: 4 Services
Early in the afternoon

A service of hope and healing for those who have experienced loss and grief: candles, prayer, and communion.

Late afternoon
A nativity pageant (the Christmas story) is re-enacted by children. All are welcome to join in.

Early Evening
A contemporary service including a drama performed by the youth.

Late evening service
Candle light, carols and communion, a quiet meaningful service.

No service is held on Christmas day, unless it falls on a Sunday.

Winter Services
At 10 a.m. each Sunday, we come together out of the cold and experience the warmth of God’s love and friendship.

Lent
Lent begins with a traditional pancake supper on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Come and celebrate Mardi Gras with us. A service is held after dinner where last year's Easter palms are burned to make ashes, so that we can wear the sign of the cross. (A small amount of ashes are placed on each forehead in the shape of a cross.)

The 40 days of Lent are a traditionally quiet time of introspection and deepening one’s faith.

Holy Week
This is the week of Good Friday. Services are held on Palm Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday has a traditional parade and a family service, where everyone is given palm leaves. Special music and readings help to prepare us for Holy Week.

Maundry Thursday On Thursday evening, youth lead a re-enactment of Jesus last night with his friends. The service includes communion.

Vigil
This is a unique opportunity. Jesus asked his friends: "Who will spend an hour with me?" We invite you to come to the church for an hour of meditation, prayer, and reflection any time during the 48 hours prior to Easter Eve. Resources for prayer and meditation are available to all who rotate through the days and nights to keep this vigil alive. The vigil ends on Saturday at midnight with the Easter Fire service.

Good Friday
A morning worship service is held to reflect on the crucifixion, life and death of Jesus. A breakfast of hot-cross buns follows and the service ends with decorating the Church for Easter.

Saturday Easter Fire Service
A small fire is held outside to celebrate Easter and new life. A candle is lit from the flames of the fire and brought inside. Dramatic readings and uplifting music celebrate the resurrection.

Easter Sunday
This is a wonderful lively service, where we have a circle dance to celebrate the risen Christ. The church is filled with flowers, decorations made by the children, joyful music and hallelujahs.

Thanksgiving
Enjoy the harvest decorations and make donations of food to Mississauga’s Food Banks.

Remembrance Sunday
Dedicated to loved ones who have passed away, Memorial Banners are dedicated at this special service. It is also a time to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom and peace.

Special Services
During the year there are other special services lead by the youth, by and for children, services celebrating through music and drama etc.

Marking the Seasons
The building is decorated to reflect the seasons of the Church:

  • Advent (December) - royal blue, pink
  • Christmas - gold
  • Epiphany (winter) - green
  • Lent (late winter) - purple
  • Good Friday- black
  • Easter- gold
  • Pentecost (remainder of year) - red and green
